Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has said President Bola Tinubu does not deserve a second term in office, citing the administration’s performance in the power sector and a promise the President made during the 2023 election campaign.
Makinde made the remark on Monday while addressing a public gathering, where he recalled Tinubu’s campaign statement that Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term if he failed to provide adequate electricity within his first four years in office.
According to the Oyo governor, the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector raise questions about whether the promise has been fulfilled. He argued that the issue of power supply should be a key factor when Nigerians assess Tinubu’s performance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
During the 2023 campaign, Tinubu had assured Nigerians that his administration would tackle the country’s electricity challenges. He reportedly told supporters that they should reject his bid for a second term if he failed to deliver on that promise during his first tenure.
However, the Presidency has previously clarified that the President also stated he would be able to provide sufficient reasons if circumstances prevented him from fully achieving the target.
Despite the clarification, Makinde insists that Tinubu should be evaluated based on the commitment he personally made to Nigerians during the election campaign.
Nigeria’s power sector remains one of the country’s biggest challenges, with households, businesses and industries continuing to grapple with unreliable electricity supply. The situation has made electricity a major talking point in discussions about the administration’s performance.
Makinde’s latest comments place the power sector at the centre of the growing political debate ahead of the 2027 election.
The APM presidential hopeful has recently emerged as one of the prominent political figures challenging Tinubu’s re-election prospects. His criticism comes as opposition politicians intensify attacks on the administration’s handling of the economy, infrastructure and other key sectors.
Meanwhile, supporters of the President have also stepped up efforts to build support for a second term. A forum of former presiding officers of state Houses of Assembly recently endorsed Tinubu’s re-election bid and pledged to mobilise support for him ahead of the next election.
For Makinde, however, the issue remains simple. He believes Tinubu should be judged by the standard he set for himself during the 2023 presidential campaign.
By reviving the President’s electricity promise, the Oyo governor has turned one of Tinubu’s own campaign commitments into a major argument against his 2027 re-election bid.
